Al igual que muchos humedales en todo el mundo, la Ciénaga de Betancí enfrenta amenazas debido a la contaminación, la deforestación y otros impactos humanos. Como resultado, se han llevado a cabo esfuerzos de conservación para proteger este valioso ecosistema y promover su uso sostenible.

Es por ello que el alcalde de Monteria Hugo Kerguelén García junto a la gestora social Diana Sierra Márquez iniciaron en el corregimiento Tres Piedras el proyecto de rehabitación de bosques protectores en las microcuencas de la Ciénaga de Betancí.

El mandatario explicó que hace 20, 30 años atrás, se hablaba de cuidarse del cambio climático y tomar medidas, pero ya ese momento llegó y se está viviendo lo que en esa época se había anticipado. El proyecto, cuyo objetivo es que los árboles de campano, roble, polvillo, matarratón y otras especies que se plantarán, capturen 6500 toneladas de CO2 que se producen al año, tiene un costo de 4.700 millones de pesos y beneficiará a 300 habitantes del área de influencia.
